Works in Haiti!
June 28, 2011

I live in Michigan but I purchased this originally for a
trip to Haiti that I just returned from. On days when I knew it
wouldn't rain, I placed my Solargorilla and minigorilla on the roof
of the place I was staying where it could soak up some very direct,
hot Haitian sun. It took several hours, but I could charge from the
sun from 0 bars to 4 bars (out of 6). In the evenings, I would then
use the minigorilla to charge my ASUS Eeepad Transformer (a tablet
PC); getting about 40% to 50% charge out of it. So, my plan was
successful. Only downside is that even if you have a connector that
fits your device, your device may not accept or recognize the
minigorilla. For example, I could not charge my Eeepad Transformer
directly from my minigorilla. To make it work, I had to purchase a
car cigarette lighter inverter so that I could convert the DC
voltage from the minigorilla to AC and then plug in my Eeepad's
charger so it could convert back to DC. Luckily, a DC car cigarette
lighter connector comes with the minigorilla so that I could make
it happen. We'll see if I can do this in the Michigan sun (I think
it will only work in the summer). Also, don't plan on running any
devices directly off of the solar gorilla. It seems to be like a
'trickle charge' with very low wattage. Just use the solar gorilla
to charge the minigorilla (takes several hours in direct sunlight)
and then use the minigorilla to charge you devices. The minigorilla
can crank out an impressive wattage when fully charged - I was able
to run some small devices off of it, but not any appliances
(couldn't run a fan off of it). It will be nice when the technology
improves further, but if you think you'll ever do extended travel
off the grid or just want to be environmentally friendly, this is a
fun and sometimes even useful product to own.
Pros:Compact Design, Durable Construction
Cons:Devices may not recognize, Slow Charging
Best Uses:Portable Electronics, Being Environmental, Travel
